ABOUT ME

Physiotherapist | Dog Lover | Food Enthusiast

I qualified in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy at Stellenbosch University. Although I have experience working with a variety of clients in various settings from rehabilitation centers to hospitals and in the community, I have a special interest in adult neurology and geriatrics. My passion is helping the elderly and those clients with particularly complex neurological cases. And I can come to you! I do home visits to accommodate those clients who have issues with transport or difficulty with mobility.

Work Experience

I have experience working in private practice, rehabilitation centers (Beit Bracha Rehabilitation Center), clinics (government clinics in Umkhanyakude Health district, KZN) and in hospitals (Mediclinic, Netcare and Tygerberg Hospital).

My rehabilitation approach is largely based on neurodevelopmental treatment and Bobath techniques. I have experience presenting pilates and hydrotherapy classes, as well as one on one hydrotherapy. I’m also qualified to do dry needling, strapping and sports massage.

ADULT NEUROLOGY

In 2020 neurological conditions were the leading cause of disability globally, and the second leading cause of death. And according to the National Stem Cell Foundation almost 4% of the global population suffers from an auto-immune disorder.

Neurological and auto-immune disorders can have a devastating impact on function and quality of life. Physiotherapy can be a valuable part of overall management of your condition to help maintain independence, decrease symptoms as well as guide you and your family through the process. Listed below are some of the conditions seen by physiotherapists, but even if you do not yet have a diagnosis, you can benefit from managing your symptoms with therapy.

Diagnoses include: Stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Dementia (including Alzheimer’s, vascular and Lewy Body dementia), Bell’s Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy and Myasthenia Gravis.

GERIATRICS

The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050 the global population of people 60 years of age or older will reach 2 billion.

With age comes certain physical changes often effecting posture, balance, endurance, mobility, and mental function. One of the most effective ways of maintaining independence, mobility, general wellbeing, and mental acuity is exercise!

Whether you need a little help managing symptoms like joint pain and stiffness to ensure you can keep doing what you love, or more comprehensive rehabilitation after a traumatic event (like illness or surgery), physiotherapy can improve outcomes and quality of life.

SLEEP HEALTH

As members and representatives of the South African Society for Sleep and Health (SASSH), our aim is to spread awareness of the important role that sleep plays in general health. Physiotherapy can assist in the management of factors which lead to or exacerbate sleep dysfunction, like chronic pain and inflammatory conditions. Exercise is also vital for good sleep and a tool physiotherapists use to help clients manage sleep better.

Sleep is a biologic process essential for life and optimal health. It plays a critical role in brain function, metabolism, and appetite regulation, as well as the functioning of the immune, hormonal, and cardiovascular systems. Which is why it is so important to address sleep dysfunction.

Normal healthy sleep is characterized by sufficient duration, good quality (going through all the phases of sleep and without frequent awakening), appropriate timing, and regularity. It also requires the absence of sleep disturbances and disorders.

MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS

These disorders may result in pain and loss of function, and are among the most disabling as well as costly conditions. They comprise diverse conditions affecting bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues.

Examples of these conditions include, but are not limited to, frozen shoulder, repetitive strain injuries, sprains, muscle or ligament tears, neck or back pain, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, Achilles tendonitis, Sciatica and referred headaches.

Physiotherapists specialize in the assessment and management of such conditions. We use a wide range of techniques selected specifically for the individual client’s needs and preferences.

TREATMENT

WHAT TO EXPECT

In the first session an assessment will be done to establish any relevant medical history, what your current complaint is and what the underlying problem may be. We will also discuss goals and the management plan going forward.

Every person is unique and so should your treatment be, each treatment plan is tailored to your individual needs.

Physiotherapy uses a combination of hands-on techniques, exercise, electrotherapy modalities and health education to address your problem. Whether it’s musculoskeletal, neurological or respiratory symptoms, physiotherapy plays an important role in conservative (no-operative and non-pharmaceutical) management of the condition.
